Slimnastics for women and men Experiment 33 via Compfight

Can we just work this out, please?

Does your body talk to you in this way?  Most of us have an entire community of internal physical advocates urging us to strengthen, tone, elongate, stretch and lift.

Every so often the Cheerleader will flip her ponytail around and chirp; “Hey there cutie, wouldn’t it be awesome to do a push up or two?  Look at me do the splits!  Remember when you used to be able to do that?”

Or the disgusted Teenager complains in between eye rolls; “OMG!  When are you going back to the gym!  You can’t even wave without the arm wobble.  You are embarrassing me!”

And the Efficiency Expert adds her two cents; “If you just wake up 18 minutes earlier each day, make dinner before you leave for the office in the morning and shower every other day, you will have time to join a gym!”

Don’t forget the Stand-Up Comedian; “When you sit around the house.. you really sit AROUND the house.  In fact, your ass is so wide it needs its own address.  Ba dum dum.  Yep, I’ll be here all week folks – just like your very large ass.”

But as a working mom, you live in the world of realities and may see things a bit differently than this collection of crude creatures that reside in your head.

Where is the real you in that cacophony?

Where is the voice of the working mom who feels the need to take care of herself but also must deal in the real world of schedules, children and work?

Can you find her voice in all that ruckus?

She’s the one who is saying that there is a solution to the problem that is realistic, do-able and fun.

She’s the one who can identify tangible benefits of getting into and staying in shape.

She’s the only one who really knows what will work for you.

Time is always a factor for the working mom.

Where will we find the time?  Will we have to let something else go?

Energy is a factor.

We are tired!  How do we muster the energy to get to the gym or even put on our workout shoes for a walk around the block?

Hopelessness can be a factor too.

What is the point of taking a walk 3 days a week?  Will it really make a difference?

Once again, you need to rely on that genius inside your head to work out a solution that works for you.

Coach Me Quick Tips for Working This Out:

What’s the point?

Write down three benefits to getting more exercise.  Make sure they are benefits that are specific to your life – not just “pat” answers to the benefits of exercise.  For example; if the idea that you may live longer if you are healthier, is an incentive, that’s a good one.  But if it doesn’t connect with you emotionally, find something else.

Is it Time?

Identify any exercise that you can build into your life now without giving something up.  Maybe you can walk to the store instead of drive or incorporate some physical activity into the time you spend with your kids?

Every Little Bit Counts.

Maybe you can only find time for a walk once per week.  If that is more than what you are doing now, it will make a big difference in the way you feel about yourself.

Baby steps work…
