Do you have 10 minutes to make something great happen?
I know, neither do I. But here’s the thing – if just for a moment, we entertain the answer “yes,” then we can start making progress towards a great idea.
Feel like you can’t squeeze in one more item on the to-do list? I understand. But what’s the cost of not moving forward? Ouch!
And who cares if it takes more time to get where you want to go as long as you are on the road? It’s the journey, right?
So you have a great idea for a business or service that you’ve been noodling around in that big brain of yours for a few years now.
Not only that, you think it could bring in some extra cash that would help your family with a few “extras” or maybe someday, the rent?
Plus, you know that the service or product you are keeping to yourself, would benefit the your future clients, once it gets off the ground.
Woo hoo! We’re on our way right?
Not so fast.
No sooner do we get started, then we get stuck on the side of the creativity highway. Stuck in the mud of “Not enough time,” “I don’t know where to start,” and “This will never happen.”
And then there is another obstacle to consider – we are just too busy!
Here are just a few sample items from my “I can’t possibly start right now, because I’m just too busy!” list. See if you recognize any of them:
* Hallowthankschrismanukah. ‘tis the season from early October through December. We start with skeletons, move right through turkey and “fixin’s” to Santa and Dreidels. When New Year’s comes, we manage to stay up until 9pm declaring it’s “midnight somewhere” and fall into bed, exhausted.
* The Birthday Vortex. What is it with birthday parties for small children? I don’t care how simple you declare this Birthday party will be – anytime you combine parents, children, cake and a pile of presents – at some point, someone will be crying – probably you, or me.
* Having a baby. I get it. However, if we can still squeeze into our jeans in month 3, we can still squeeze in a few action steps before baby’s arrival.
C’mon people, we can do better than this! This is the 21st Century after all. We have streamlined and optimized ourselves into efficiency. But we still can’t get ourselves out of the mud and rolling down the highway to success?
Well, things they are a-changing.
The secret is in 10 minutes every day.
Can you find it? Remember, you promised to entertain the answer “yes.” Can you find 10 minutes to do something – anything towards making your dream come true?
Last week we talked about clarifying your vision and understanding:
1. Your great idea
2. What gets in the way
3. Fear of failure
This week we are going to talk about taking the steps necessary to move forward.
Here’s a start:
1. Identify 10 minutes each day that you can focus on moving your business forward and block off that time in your calendar.
2. Identify the first 3 steps required to move forward (this may take more than one 10-minute session)
3. Break each step down into parts that can be achieved in 10 minutes.
Here’s the trick, don’t stop breaking it down until you have 10 minute pieces.
Let’s review: Identify 3 steps and then break them down into 10 minute pieces.
Here’s an example:
1. Create a website
a. Sign up for a hosting site
b. Write a mission statement
c. Find a picture for home page
d. Write my bio
e. Identify my niche or client base
i. Spend time doing research
ii. Ask friends their opinions
2. Organize home office
a. Fill up one box of things to be given away
b. Add 2 shelves to the closet
c. Research the cost of a 2nd phone line
3. Get some support
a. Find a babysitter for 2 afternoons per week.
When you need inspiration, you need to go no further than yourself!
Go back to the work you did in part one on your vision, the value of your product and service and the people who will benefit from your idea.
Remember – in just 10 minutes a day, you can create something great.
