I’m serious about this.
What do you laugh about?
Who do you laugh with?
What is truly funny to you?
Maybe you had the good fortune to marry someone who makes you laugh?
While I can list many reasons for marrying my Husband, the personality trait that really sealed the deal, was his sense of humor.
Sure, he can make me laugh when things are going well, but he can also make me laugh when I am disgruntled, tired, and fed up. Now THAT’S an art!
What about you?
Do your children make you laugh?
Most children provide built in humor from morning ‘til night. If your children are anything like mine, there are endless opportunities to laugh with them and (yes I admit it) AT them, as they toddle from infancy to adulthood.
And since my children learned that the ability to make others laugh is highly valued in our household, they have honed it carefully.
If you are able to keep mommy laughing, you get twice your share of cookies, and don’t need to take a bath for a week.
I will readily give up nutrition and cleanliness for a good chuckle.
And what form of humor do you enjoy?
Are you a punster, or do you favor a well-placed zinger? Perhaps a funny face or wry aside?
How about your friends?
If there’s not enough levity going on at home, try nurturing friendships with people that are sillier than you.
Be sure to find someone who makes you laugh so hard, you actually snort on occasion.
Find a friend who can tell a dirty joke and make you laugh so hard you cry. Find a friend that can make you laugh when you are crying on her shoulder. That replaces a year of therapy and costs nothing.
Laughter solidifies connections between family and friends and even if it didn’t, it just feels good. That’s a good enough reason, right there!
So as we step from Winter to Spring and then Summer to Fall, what do you think YOU will be laughing about?
Coach Me Quick tips for Grinning Year to Year:
1. What makes you laugh? Maybe there is a stand-up comic you love to watch or a person that you enjoy spending time with because you laugh together?
2. Once you identify where your laughter comes from, be sure you include opportunities for laughter in your day to day life.
3. Notice when you react with frustration or overwhelm to something that happens. Can you see the humor in that situation?
4. Appreciate the humor in your life and work to expand it so that you can continue to grin year to year.
